EDITORIAL: Checks should include departments, appeals

In accordance with a law passed by the state legislature, Western will be including criminal background checks as part of its hiring process. All serious offenses from the past seven years will appear in reports for all part-time, full-time, temporary, time-limited, graduate assistant and student employees.

The legislation, House Bill 3, was passed with the intention of punishing those found guilty of sex offenses and violent crimes. It affects all public schools and universities in Kentucky.

The Herald supports the law, as it leaves much of the decision-making up to Western. Human Resources Director Tony Glisson said the law only gives Western the authority to drop an applicant whose record proves troubling; it does not require Western to drop any applicants for specific reasons.

FBI checks into report that Jacob Alexander is in Sri Lanka

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is checking whether fugitive Jacob Alexander, the former chief executive officer of Comverse Technology Inc., is hiding in Sri Lanka, a US Embassy spokesman in Tel Aviv said.

Alexander, 54, who is known by the nickname Kobi, was traced through an international money transfer and a Skype Technologies SA phone call between his family home in Israel and Colombo, Sri Lanka's capital, according to private detective Moshe Buller, who followed up his leads by getting on a plane to Sri Lanka.

"I saw him with my own eyes; it was definitely Kobi," said Buller, who was hired by a New York venture capital fund that he declined to identify in a telephone interview Thursday. "The place is so small, it wasn't hard to find him."

The founder of Comverse, the world's biggest maker of voice-mail software, was declared a fugitive by US authorities August 15.

Magnolia Elec. Co., Oneida, Calvin Johnson on Comp

With things like Soulseek and MySpace now serving as the primary means by which indie rock reaches college students' ears, one might argue that the once-proud tradition of college radio is no longer as relevant as it once was. Hell, I spent four years in Ann Arbor, and I can't even tell you what our station was called.

But thankfully for the residents of Greensboro, North Carolina, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro's WUAG 103.1 does not intend to go gently into that good night. In recent years, WUAG has seen a host of local and national acts play in their studio and at station-sponsored performances. Now, the station has put together 18 Watts Is Better Than None, a double-disc compilation of exclusive tracks from many of those sessions.

The first disc features many of the national acts which have passed through Greensboro, including Boom Bip, Oneida, Calvin Johnson, and Magnolia Electric Co.

NATION IN BRIEF

SACRAMENTO -- California would become the first state to impose a limit on emissions of greenhouse gases, including those from industrial plants, under a landmark deal reached by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) and legislative Democrats.

The agreement puts California on a path to reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other such gases by an estimated 25 percent by 2020. The bill needs lawmakers' approval, but that appears likely, given that Democrats control the legislature.
