Your computer's spell-check function can be "grate." But as you can see from this example, it doesn't always catch words that are spelled correctly but used incorrectly. Therefore, it's critical that, after running spell check, you closely proofread your job-application materials for easy-to-overlook -- but potentially troublesome -- errors. Trust me, it's "vary" important and will "bee" well worth your "thyme."

Current job: "Paralegal at a personnel injury firm."

Hopefully, they offer good health insurance.

I assume this next candidate meant to use the word "references":

Cover letter: "I have several professional and personal referees."

Do you carry a camera for slow-motion replay?

The following three applicants took it upon themselves to simply make up their own words:

Cover letter: "I was implemental in expanding the business."

Were you also instrumental in expanding the business?

Cover letter: "I'm currently gamefully employed."

Maybe he's a professional athlete -- or a gambler.

What's Going Around -- 8/31/06

From allergies to well-checks to so-called spider bites, August is one of the busiest times of year for local doctors, so KXAN checked in to find out What's Going Around.

In Central Austin, Dr. Sandi Treybig at Capital Pediatrics says it's mostly bigger kids who are spreading around strep throat. Draw your own conclusions there. And preschoolers are suffering the agonizing virus of Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease. After a fever, you'll see blisters on their hands, feet and inside their mouth.

And from schools to home and back again, Treybig says head colds, not necessarily allergies, are also going around.

From Anderson Mill, Dr. Madhu Hooda at Austin Regional Clinic says those colds and allergies can quickly turn into sinus infections. Watch for fever or a cloudy discharge.

Israeli casualties initially reported in action against Hizballah ...

The first Israeli air strikes against a village in the Sidon area were staged Sunday morning, Aug. 6, targeting sites from which long-range missiles were fired on Hadera, midway between Haifa and Tel Aviv, Friday night. Leaflets dropped Saturday, ordered the population to leave their homes.

Israeli jets bombed roads in the eastern Bekaa valley at least eight times on Sunday, virtually isolating the region from the rest of Lebanon and cutting off roads bringing fresh supplies to Hizballah from nearby Syria.

Also hit were 2 bases of Ahmed Jibrils pro-Syrian Palestinian PFLP-General Command south of Beirut.

Report: HP Should Buy Security Firm

IBM Corp.'s $1.3 billion purchase last week of security software maker Internet Security Systems Inc. puts pressure on rivals such as Hewlett-Packard Co. to expand their own security offerings, analysts said.

In a research report Friday Cowen and Co. LLC analyst Walter Pritchard said that in the wake of Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM's purchase, HP should acquire a major security company. Two of the most probable targets would be McAfee Inc. and Symantec Corp., a large and diversified security provider whose products in consumer and enterprise security, data protection and server management could enhance many parts of HP's business, he said.

"Clearly, an acquisition of Cupertino, Calif.-based Symantec would be a broader move than just filling in the security piece," Pritchard wrote.
