SMEs suffer as consumers get into debt, new data shows
Australian consumers are getting into debt over increasingly smaller amounts and placing additional cash flow pressures on Australia's SME community, according to the latest default trends data from Dun & Bradstreet's (D&B) debt collection agency.
Queensland businesses are being hit hardest, with locak consumers more likely to default than any other debtor in the country.
The smaller the default, the more difficult it can be to collect, according to the latest trends data.
In a climate where business payments typically take almost double the standard payment term, the fact that more than half (56%) of all consumer debt referred is less than $400 means that businesses – in particular SMEs – are finding themselves under additional pressure, D&B says.
Foreign investment to boost tertiary education
Businessman Ramon Orosa said the Philippines must reach out to the rest of the world and cannot rely solely on its own experiences as far education is concerned. Knowledge is universal, you cannot imprison knowledge and you should not imprison minds, said Orosa, were not a fountain of knowledge. Orosa is a member of Charter Change Advocacy Commission (AdCom) that is campaigning for responsible lifting of restrictions in the economic provisions of the Constitution. Under the existing Charter, foreign players are barred from participating in the ownership and operation of college and other higher learning institutions. The country, AdCom says, needs specialized institutions that will train Filipinos in science, engineering and other related technologies that industries needed badly.
Clean partnership
WE DOUBT the wisdom of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyos decision to tinker with one of her early executive orders (No. 12) creating the Presidential Anti-Graft Commission (PAGC). Under Executive Order 531-A, the powers of the PAGC have been trimmed. The executive secretary is now authorized to overturn any of its rulings. The reason for this is that the coverage of the PAGC has been expanded under the same order. While it was initially empowered to go after government appointees suspected of misusing government funds, the order, as amended, now applies to other public officers and employees and private persons in conspiracy or connivance with covered presidential appointees. Why expand the coverage of the order, while making the executive secretary a kind of appeals tribunal? Accusations that the order will serve as a means to go after enemies of the administration, while affording the Palace a chance to absolve any allies caught in the PAGC dragnet cant be far behind.

"It's very important," the 37-year-old Brockton father of two, who works as a security officer, said Monday. "You want to know who has control of your kids and you don't want to have someone with a record of any kind being responsible." But in some communities, including Brockton, school officials have failed to run their own Criminal Offender Record Information checks on the drivers, despite a state law that requires it and a scandal that erupted last spring when a convicted sex offender was caught driving a bus for a Braintree company. Instead, some communities depend on private bus companies to do the clearances for them. "If a district isn't doing its own CORI, it is not in compliance with state law," said Nate Mackinnon, a spokesman for the state Department of Education.

New York - From the historical and scenic Top Of The Rock Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center, MTV today announced the nominees for the "2006 MTV Video Music Awards." Shakira and The Red Hot Chili Peppers topped the list with seven nominations each for "Hips Don't Lie" and "Dani California" respectively. Madonna's "Hung Up" and Panic! At The Disco's, "I Write Sins Not Tragedies," follow with five nods while Christina Aguilera received four nods for "Ain't No Other Man." It was also announced that Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, T.I., Panic! At The Disco, Ludacris and The Killers are scheduled to perform on the big show. In addition, it was announced today that The Raconteurs will provide the soundtrack for the VMA's live throughout the show. Host, additional performers and presenters will be announced shortly.
