Plaintiffs receive settlement checks in sexual abuse case

By Saturday, checks arrived for 45 people who said they were abused as children by nuns at the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.

It was announced that the order of nuns will pay $1.5 million to settle allegations of sexual abuse at the old St. Thomas-St. Vincent orphanage in Anchorage.

As children back in the 1950's, the victims said their memory of days at the orphanage include beatings by nuns, boys sodomized. One plaintiff, Gail Ann Miller, said she remembers being raped at the hands of a priest.

The checks were for a little under $20,000 each, but according to victim Gladys Bambron, the real value is a feeling of vindication.

The priest in question, Father Herman Lammers died years ago as have the nuns.

In reaching the deal, the Sisters of Charity stopped short of admitting guilt, but attorney William McMurry said it doesn't matter.

The color front cover depicts all seven main characters (eight if you include the hamster) with a white background. The book's title is nicely done with ‘Aoi' written in greek letters and ‘House' written in a somewhat girly pink script. The back cover has a book synopsis and a picture of the ‘panty hamster' lovin' on a pair of red panties. The printing is good for the most part but there are some pages that look a little faded. There are extensive extras in the ‘Aoi Notes' section at the back. ‘Aoi Notes' has statistics for each character, discussions of character names and how the writer came up with various ideas.

Artwork:
The artwork is okay, but I did really enjoy the character design for this title. The women are really cute and most of the different body/personality types are present and accounted for.

Guardianship program to aid self-neglecting elderly

A son steals money from his elderly father's pension; a home is too cluttered to walk through because nothing was put in the trash for years.

These are some of the stories surrounding senior citizens suffering from dementia and poverty.

For years, those suffering from self-neglect were referred to local attorneys, who were appointed their guardians.

They made choices for the wards (the elderly adults) on everything from their living arrangement to health care.

After the introduction of the Lutheran Social Services of Northwestern Ohio's Volunteer Guardianship Program later this year, developers say community members will be appointed to the wards.

After gaining legal approval, an adult guardian is appointed to take care of the decision making for the elderly suffering from a loss of mental awareness.

How to reduce your spam intake

An associate in the newsroom asked me "What can I do about all this junk e-mail?" My first thought, thankfully unspoken, was "learn to live with it." As I thought it over again, however, I realized that there are positive steps she can take to stem the tide of electronic junk, and to manage it with less effort. You may benefit from these as well.

The first thing you can do to get this flood of unwanted e-mail under control is to get yourself off of as many mailing lists as possible. Legitimate U.S.-based commercial e-mailers must provide an opt-out option in their e-mail, and honor that option when you exercise it.

Be careful, however, about using opt-out links on spam messages from unknown or less-than-reliable senders. Their opt-out link could simply confirm the validity of your e-mail address to them, or worse yet, cause spyware to be downloaded to your computer.

Ghana: Black And Proud

I was in Makola the other day and this bangles seller was literally in my face with a tray of bangles. As I was looking at them, my friend whispered in my ear that they were the wiring that holds the latex to the female condom. My God, I exclaimed.

These condoms are supposed to protect women from STD's and HIV. It might be said to be an innovation, but it is terrible that it has come to this. I hear it is cumbersome to wear - this female condom - and perhaps this is why someone cottoned on to the brilliant idea of using the wire as bangles and cheap at that! Hmm is all I can say.

I was a bit taken aback, admittedly when I was told; it reminded me of the shampoo that was used by many women to bleach in the 80's.The shampoo was supposed to cure dandruff effectively and had an antibacterial element in it that did just that.
