REGNUM » News » “Yeltsin’s visit to Latvia …
In an interview to REGNUM on August 30 Ambassador of Russia to Latvia Viktor Kalyuzhny comments on the situation over the visit of the Russian ex president Boris Yeltsin to Latvia, where on August 22 he was awarded the Order of Three Stars. Yeltsins figure is quite ambiguous: some people like him, others dont. But, in any case, it was due to Yeltsin that Russia chose to develop democracy and let the other 14 post-Soviet republics choose how to develop. Speaking, particularly, of Latvia, Yeltsin was the first to recognize its independence. He did that even earlier than the US. He solved the problem of troop withdrawal in a civilized manner with no haggle. I would like to remind you that in 1991 Russians joined Latvians on barricades for Latvias independence.
More than 800 'lost' checks found by county
LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - Lancaster County officials revealed today they have uncovered more than 800 uncashed checks totaling more than $1.13 million from a former employees desk. The number of checks is far more than officials thought when they intitiated an investigation earlier this week. The stunning discovery includes 374 unprocessed applications for the Clean and Green land preservation program dating back to 2003, as well as $460.75 in cash. Meantime, top county officials were hard-pressed to explain why no one in the courthouse, and particularly the tax assessment office, noticed the former employee apparently wasnt doing his job over the past three years. Thats a very good question, said Commissioner Dick Shellenberger. Were taking this very seriously.

Pro-Gun Groups Disagree on Bill Improving Background Checks
(CNSNews.com) - A Second Amendment group is warning gun owners that a "massive gun control bill" is now working its way through Congress -- and is surprisingly close to becoming law. Gun Owners of America also admits that it is the only national pro-gun group to oppose the "NICS Improvement Act of 2005" (H.R. 1415). Introduced by gun control advocate Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, H.R. 1415 is intended to improve the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), which screens would-be gun buyers for mental problems or criminal convictions that would bar them from buying guns. Most background checks are processed through NICS in seconds, but some are delayed if the FBI lacks complete, updated, and automated information from the states. The bill notes that approximately 24 million criminal records are not automated or not accessible to NICS; and another 16 million criminal records are not up to date.
Consumers: Get Ready for Fall With 5-Point Check List
Normal September weekend chores include vacuuming the beach sand out of the car trunk and putting baking soda in the ice chest before stowing it away. But consumers also should cross-check their home telecommunications services to prepare for the hurricane and winter storm season, as well as the whirlwind of activities that autumn brings to family life. Here's a checklist: * Corded Phone: Purchase an inexpensive phone with a cord that plugs into a wall jack. It's hurricane season, and winter storms are not far behind. Verizon's network is self-powered, so service stays on even during a power failure, provided the phone line itself is not down. Cordless phones won't work when the lights are out and neither will Internet calling services because the hardware requires power. Having a traditional corded phone available or always hooked up to an extension helps consumers stay in touch.
Firefox 2.0 advances to Beta 2
The second beta is intended to gather additional feedback while delivering enhancements and bug fixes over the Beta 1 that was released last July. The next stage will be the launch of a Release Candidate 1, which is scheduled to ship on 19 September. The new browser version offers build in protection against known phishing sites. The integrated search option also provides search suggestions as users are typing for Google, Yahoo! and Answers.com. Other new features include a spell check for online forms such as used for blogging services and to leave feedback. The browser has fallen behind its original development schedule that intended for the final product to be available by August. The Mozilla Corporation in October expected a release by 24 October, but project currently doesn’t list a projected launch date.
