Widen checks: Liberals

THE NSW Government is compromising the safety of children by not imposing background checks on volunteers working with children, the NSW Opposition says.

NSW Minister for Community Services Reba Meagher says the Commissioner for Children and Young People is reviewing the system of volunteer screening, with background checks being presently carried out on paid employees only.

While volunteers are required to sign declaration forms verifying they have not been convicted of a serious offence involving children, the forms are not being passed on by organisations to the commission.

Opposition spokeswoman for community services and youth affairs, Gladys Berejiklian, said it was unacceptable that the Government had not delivered on its policy announced in 2000 to screen volunteers.
