REGNUM » News » “Yeltsin’s visit to Latvia …

In an interview to REGNUM on August 30 Ambassador of Russia to Latvia Viktor Kalyuzhny comments on the situation over the visit of the Russian ex president Boris Yeltsin to Latvia, where on August 22 he was awarded the Order of Three Stars.

Yeltsins figure is quite ambiguous: some people like him, others dont. But, in any case, it was due to Yeltsin that Russia chose to develop democracy and let the other 14 post-Soviet republics choose how to develop.

Speaking, particularly, of Latvia, Yeltsin was the first to recognize its independence. He did that even earlier than the US. He solved the problem of troop withdrawal in a civilized manner with no haggle.

I would like to remind you that in 1991 Russians joined Latvians on barricades for Latvias independence.

Not all surfboards are created equal

I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that there hasn't been much surf lately. Basically shin to waist high has been the call for the last couple of weeks except for an odd hour or two at some special tide or place. We are overdue for some swell.

The last couple of surfs I've had have been bordering on dangerous. Super shallow little beach breaks backwashing on the sandbars and jacking into some bottom dropping peaks that threaten to break your neck, if not your board. My son snapped two fins in two sessions. And all of us found ourselves getting thrown head first on occasion into some very shallow water.

Today I got launched into a face plant where I narrowly averted serious injury by stiff arming the sand. When I stood up it was barely deeper than my ankles. A couple of more close calls like that and I was ready to call it a day.

Police check child-molestation claims after lawyer kills neighbour

Police are investigating whether there was any basis for the suspicions of a Connecticut lawyer accused of stabbing a neighbour to death because he believed the man molested his two-year-old daughter.

"We have no indication it's true or not true," said Capt. Gary MacNamara, whose officers are investigating Monday's slaying in Fairfield, Conn.

Jonathon Edington, a 29-year-old patent lawyer, has been charged with murder in the death of Barry James, 58.

Police allege that he climbed through James's bedroom window and stabbed him a dozen times with a kitchen knife after hearing from his wife that the neighbour had inappropriate contact with their daughter.

"The daughter gave the mother information which was alarming and disturbing," said Edington's attorney, Michael Sherman.
